Sars targets unregistered bond-holders
Posted Wed, 05 Mar 2003

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) is pulling out all stops to nab tax dodgers and identify owners of expensive homes who are not registered to pay tax.

Addressing Parliament's finance portfolio committee on Tuesday, Franz Tomasek of Sars' law administration department said some 16 000 individuals with bonds of more than R750 000 had been singled out for closer investigation.

These were all people who were either unregistered for tax purposes or were not submitting annual tax returns.

"They will all be receiving letters — about 1000 have already," he said.

Sars merely wanted a "better understanding" of the tax affairs of homeowners who could afford the payments on such bonds without necessarily being able to afford to pay tax.

Tomasek said the service was also liaising with other third parties, such as the traffic authorities to check car registrations, and the credit bureau.

In addition, Sars was studying light aircraft and yacht registers to cross reference ownership against tax compliance, he said
